Black + White in Color

These small sets of photographs were shot on black & white film in the 1970s and 1990s. Over the past several years I’ve added color, digitally painting each image to varying degrees. The impetus for doing this grew from a previous series, Images of Images, in which I re-photographed and digitally altered fragments of anonymous photographs. Prior to the widespread use of color film, these anonymous prints were themselves often hand-painted to varying degrees.

In this series, adding color to my black & white images requires a second engagement with the subject, slower and closer. For me it has been a meditative re-immersion in the moments and situations in which each portrait was originally made. Within this deeper examination of each encounter, there’s both synthesis and discovery.
